OK a background first
This list is about Ray, his books, and his interests.
The only person that in theory can start an Off Topic thread is Ray, as
it is of interest to him.
Now for how it generally works,
Threads start On Topic and can drift Off Topic, Ray may stay in the
topic if it interests him, but in general they usually tail off and die,
as interest drops.
If you want to talk about something that you think may be of interest to
Ray, ask Ray.
For example
Ray are you interested in "xyz" when the response likely be yes or no.
If the answer is yes the topic may progress, if it's no, it should just
die
or you could ask
Ray are you interested in "xyz" , and if so what is your opinion on it.
In which case you may get a no answer, but if yes you may also get a
more full response, which may evolve into a discussion.
So basically if you want to talk about something, ask Ray, if he is
interested in it, and if he is not.....
Exception
Most people on the list accept notices of bereavement, usually of other
authors, or concerns/well wishes for other list members at time of
catastrophe, even though in theory they are off topic.
And yes, even I got pulled up by Ray on starting OT many years ago, but
he pointed out how I should have approached the situation, which I was
grateful, and hopefully have learned from it :)
