I'm a big fan of David Gemmell so I would always recommend him (anyone read
Stella's book?), for something a bit different and not exactly fantasy Ice
Prophet by William R. Forstchen.

More traditionally the Books of Swords by Fred Saberhagen, lots of stuff by
Anne McCaffery with dragons (one would be a great accompaniment to my
borders) and The Horse lord et al by Peter Morrwood . Many more if you need
more suggestions.
