One issue is that the first time an email has delivery problems, Cornell
seems to drop your email from the list with no second chances. So if your
ISP restarts their mail server and it's down for two minutes, and a
listserve message happens to come out during those two minutes and the
email server for the listserve sees your ISP's mail server isn't answering,
you're probably going to get kicked off. Since gmail has more redundancies
than many email systems, it's less likely to be caught in that net.

Note that this is supposition based on observed behavior, not insider
knowledge.
