fyi, I believe qt allows you to create a custom event loop:

Not sure how exactly to get it to work, but I think it would allow us to 
own the loop. Apparently someone was using this to integrate the gtk and 
qt event loop:

Perhaps somewhere in that thread is a discussion on how to break option 
the gtk event loop as well.
