Ah well, a clue:

fthread socket 14 close delay ..
fthread socket 14 shutdown now
fthread 14 terminating!
Actually collect
actually collected 1007 objects, still allocated: 24 roots, 204 objects, 34812
bytes
Actually collect
actually collected 2 objects, still allocated: 24 roots, 204 objects, 34812
bytes
got connection 14
Waiting for connection
Spawned fthread running for socket 14

The page hit was done with curl. One extra byte! I have confirmed.
Every time I load that page, I end up with the same number
of objects and roots, but one more byte of store.

This is a bit weird. It has to be some kind of array being allocated based
on some counter. Hmm ..
