i know that what i've been told is that it was an ingredient in the injection, the adjuvant(?), that was the problem, and that most vaccine makers have changed this. the other part of the equation was that so many shots are given in roughly the same place, perhaps sensitizing that area. new vaccination protocols call for different vacs to be given in different places--ie, rabies in one leg, FeLV in another, etc--i do NOT remember the exact pattern but i know it's on-line somewhere... (aren't i a big help today?) the logic behind THAT is to identify which vaccines are causing the problem reaction as well as minimize the continued trauma of multiple injections.
i'd guess that the size of the needle would affect it, too, since insulin needles are so fine compared to most others.
