Nice to see you back online! I'm sorry to hear about Purrl but I think you will be able to manage her megacolon just fine. They thought my Sophie had megacolon, too, you know but it turned out not to be so. I joined the Yahoo megacolon list and learned a lot there. Here is the URL if you are interested, OK?

The Propulsid is good for keeping the bowel movements coming, also most everyone on the megacolon list has their cats on lactulose, too, to keep the stools soft. Some believe in high fiber diet, such as W/D, and some add pumpkin to the meals or sprinkle non-flavored metamucil or such. Others, like me, have gone the other direction, and use low residue diet, to keep the stool size small and easier to pass. I give Sophie Hill's I/D, canned and dry. Others suggest giving only canned food, no dry, although I do give Sophie a handful of dry with her meals as she loves her crunching. Others, including me, give their cats methylcobalamin, which can help restore enervation to the rectal area. Your Purrl probably has no problem that way, though, right? I think that is more for the cats with trauma to the rectal area, like Sophie. Others give Ester C, too. I give Sophie home enemas when she gets plugged up but haven't had to much lately, (knock on wood). There is an excellent write-up on how to give home enemas on the list. I can get it for you if you don't want to join the list, OK? It sure saves stress and money and possible anesthesia worries if you can handle it at home, rather than take your baby to the vet for cleaning out.
Well, I hope that helps a bit. Let me know if I can help more, OK? Julie is an expert on megacolon, too, as she helped me get started with Sophie!
Love,
Anne and the kits and dugs

Hi guys, I haven't posted for a long time, but
we're all still around. My oldest girl, Purrl,
who is 17, has developed megacolon. I know
nothing about this disease. The doc has her on
Propulsid (it's now illegal for humans, but my
locaL compounding pharmacist can mAke it for
animals) and I give hjer sub q fluids every day,
but what else can my friends, the real experts,
tell me? Thanks! Luv, Nancy and her MC
