The muck in his ears could easily be ear mites - I would get him to the vet next week for a check up if he is OK through the weekend, with the quiet to settle in. What is in the vomit? If it looks like it could be a hairball trying to get out - try some of the hairball goop. The heating pad is a good idea. Stress can do some very strange things to our bodies. If you have a radio in there, put it on the Ideas network and he can listen to people talking (low volume of course:)) or soft classical or something.
