In your next election, find out WHO is running for district attorney in your local area. It doesn't hurt to identify all of the electible judges either. Don't omit sheriffs either and police chiefs. Put this issue on their agenda right from the beginning. All the national and state legislation won't mean a hill of beans unless it is enforced, prosecuted and abjudicated. I live in a section of the state that has a serious dogfighting problem. Our county, however, does not. Why? Because we elected a DA who was very aggressive and worked closely with the Humane Society to rid us of the problem. People actually did jail time here. Dozens of people got prosecuted to the max. Our sheriff department is mandated to respond to the problem and to reported dog thefts. It worked. Dogfighters are afraid of our county. Our Humane Society Director said that dogs are not being stolen in our county for fear of drawing attention to themselves either. Not one dog has been stolen in our county in years (except for the rare domestic dispute type cases). If you have true legal recourse, the word gets around and things improve. She said the problem lies in the complacent counties that do not prosecute.During your next election, talk to the candidates. Organize your dog clubs, cat clubs, Humane Society, pet lovers, your neighbors, coworkers and have them ALL approach the candidates. Make it known that you think the problem a priority. This really does work. In fact, it is rather scary at how easy the solution truly is. We are now one of the safest counties in the state when it comes to dogfighting.For those of you who don't think this is a cat issue, please rethink. Some of these sickos use cats as bait animals.

Our nation and its animals need your voice today! As you may know, the sadistic blood sports of dogfighting and cockfighting continue in many states. Federal officials have shied away from investigating and prosecuting some of these crimes, citing the weak statute and penalties applicable to such offenses. A vital piece of legislation that will help address this issue—the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act—was introduced in the House and the Senate on February 15 and is being reviewed by committees.
If they are passed by the Congress, S.382 and H.R.817 will strengthen prohibitions against animal fighting. The transport of animals for fighting—currently a federal misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail—would become a felony, with offenders facing two years in prison. The legislation would also criminalize the interstate shipment of cockfighting paraphernalia, including the razor-sharp gaffs typically attached to roosters’ legs before fights.

I'm sure you're aware of the major bust here in Georgia where people had brought children to such a gruesome event. I believe it is time for the federal government to get more involved as the people involved cross state lines and put not only their 'fighting animals', but people's pets and children in danger through their actions.I truly believe the increase in dog attacks we are seeing on children are related to these idiots abusing and training their animals to kill.Please support the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act!
