Yep, that's the first thing I think of with blood in urine.  As far as 
blood in poop, my Kimba Cat occasionally has blood in his feces.  My vet 
told me not to worry too much unless it keeps recurring.  She says that 
it can be an indication of stress.  Kimba is always under alot of stress 
around here.  He loves the humans and the dogs, but has a problem 
relating to the other cats.  The color is an indicator too.  Bright red 
vs. dark brown to black.  I'd keep a close eye on him to see if he's 
showing any other symptoms, is he straining when he defecates?  Are the 
stools otherwise normal looking?  Your friend should at least bring in a 
sample with the blood to have tests run.
