i wish i could tell you where i found the idea so you could look it up
for details, but it's one of those, "heard it, read it, filed it in
the random-access facility i call my brain" things....

i used to change the peels every couple of months.... 

nothing REALLY kills them for good except for one thing that i know
of--practical (well, possible at least) up north.... once it gets cold
enough for a freeze, turn off the heat, open the windows, grab your
cats and other significants, and leave for a day or so.... they'll
freeze to death....

and the little darlings totally ignore us--it doesn't matter how clean
your house is, whether or not you leave food out (what we consider
food, at least)--they can happily exist on the glue used in making
boxes, tiny scraps of soap, and other unpalatable stuff.... so if you
DO have roaches and are moving, DO NOT USE ANY BOXES YOU HAVE STORED
IN YOUR HOUSE!!!!!!!!
