As I understand it, the babies and the sick are the most vulnerable. I only have adult cats, but am always wary of the old and infirm.

I tell people who don't understand why my (older) Momcat stays negative
but all the babies were (and remained) positive that like humans,
babies, the sick (and presumably the old) are the most vulnerable to
contracting FeLV. Their immune system isn't strong enough to withstand
it. All 4 kittens of the feral colony I took in tested positive twice,
as did the one other older cat Snowball, and 3 of the 4 have now died of
FeLV-related illness. Needless to say, having seen 4 of these dear
kitties die, 3 before they were two years old, I treat FeLV like the
plague.

Subject: Re: new to list - question on kittens and comment re Georgie

Hi Janine,

I'm in Arkansas - our rescue has quite a few cats and kittens. We
test initially with the Elisa test when the kitties come into the
program. We buy the tests in bulk, and then have a participating vet
tech do the test. Then if the cat tests positive, we test again with
the Elisa in 3 to 6 months. More than once, we've had kittens test
positive at first, then go negative on the second test.

We have a few people who will take FELV cats. It's not that
contagious, in my experience, and according to the vet i've used
often. I've also found a disarming array of opinions (and ignorance)
among vets about FELV.

Best of luck,

Gloria
