Your vets' results sounds like what the vets have told us with
regard to Stinky. It seems to me that an IFA should pick up the FeLV if it
has gotten to a stage where it is causing anemia but, our vets are saying the
IFA may be wrong. I am confused about testing. Our cat's results
were ELISA very slight positive, IFA negative and the recommendation, keep her
from developing a secondary infection hence the antibiotics and retest in 30
days with Interferon once a day to fight the attack on red blood cells and bring
her in any time she is acting as though she is weak or will not eat, etc.
Stinky had a fever on Saturday but, the antibiotics must have taken care of that
problem because yesterday she had no fever but, her count is back down to
18. They will run another CBC on Monday and most likely do another
transfusion. It is getting to the point that I am so confused I do not
know where to turn or what to do. They want a bone marrow test if the
second FeLV tests are negative or conflicted. So, other than Interferon,
it sounds as though your vets are doing everything they can to treat with regard
to the causes of anemia in cats with the exception of cancer. But, I am
not the best person to ask. I rely on this group to know what to ask and
about what to use to treat symptoms. I also have found great comfort in
knowing there is a lot of people out there that care about animals the way all
the folks on this site do. The information that has been passed on to me
by all the generous folks on this site has been invaluable. Best of luck
