well, I'm not a pharmacist, but I'm on nortryptiline for chronic atypical migraine and that is in the same class of drugs as amitryptilline - it's tri-cyclic antidepressant, and chemically, it's a neurotransmitter, and for reasons unknown to the establishment, they sometimes work to solve various problems in humans and I'd be more inclined to add a neurotransmitter than to control one particular biochemical (seratonin) for an animal because it's not like they can always tell us precisely what's wrong emotionally and if it's something along the lines of traumatic depression or clinical depression, they probably don't understand it either

That is what can happen in humans but not sure about cats. However, I've known amitryptilline medication to help cats with skin conditions as it fools them into thinking they don't care about the itchyness etc...
