Dear Julia, It pains me greatly to write this, but this happened in '95 to my beautiful black Burmese Sasha. The vet didn't seem to know what was wrong - later, when Sasha was extremely ill, she told me that chylothorax/pleural effusion was almost always a sign of an underlying condition such as cancer. Sasha did die of cancer two months after his first episode of chylothorax and draining the fluid.
I wish I had known it at the time - maybe he could have been treated for the cancer. I am hoping for the best and praying for your sweet Samantha.
