There are medical appetite stimulants you can try if you really need to. The most common one is periactin, generic name cyproheptadine. It can make them really hungry, but with some cats it also makes them incredibly drowsy and out of it.  B12 injections often stimulate appetite and do not have side effects, so you can ask your vet to give them or you can order the stuff yourself (someone else can tell you how if you are interested).

You can also feed something fattier, like duck,  some of the time.

Dear Friends,

My 5-year old Bubba was sick recently; the vet could not figure out what caused the fever and no other symptoms except occasional sneezing.  Anyway, Bubba lost 5 of his 15 pounds because his appetite fell off.

I am trying to fatten him back up because 10 pounds is not a healthy weight for him.  He eats vigorously when he is especially hungry, such as first thing in the morning, but he has to be encouraged to eat later in the day.  I have been giving him Nutri-Cal and hand-feeding him "cat pate" but I'd really like to know what can be done to stimulate his appetite again.

Many thanks!
