Hi Christine,

I will be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.  I hope Dodger finds a furever home, but until then I'm glad you are caring for him :)

Hi Everyone,
people with Felv cats who are reaching out for help in waters they are new to and maybe never even knew existed shouldn't be met with judgment of being w/o voice, ignorant, without concern, and undeserving of sympathy.
If the above were true then they wouldn't be looking for help.
I'm the person who wrote to someone at a facility about my stray, Dodger..
"I need a fiv felv home today or Dodger will die. Please HELP!!"
I had no idea that my letter would be forwarded here. Just found it by chance the other night as I continue to learn about these diseases.
I read the following responses  to my forwarded email, along with a few more:
"Please pass on my dismay at waiting until it was too late...and our dismay at the ignorance and seeming lack of concern on this persons end. It is always hard when we seemed to be faced with a "Take this cat or it will die ultimatum" I feel so sad for the poor cat, but I do not have any sympathy for the owner. It also saddens me that some women are at the mercy of their husbands last word. Have they no voice? "
My response to this attitude is that I am also saddened when people seem to forget what it's like to not have experience dealing with the sudden bad news and prognoses from the trusted neighborhood vet that "your cat should be put down...and we're open until 6"
I was a mess when the vet called with our bad news, ...I DID think I had only hours to come up with an alternative! Hence the ugly "ultimatum"...
but it was the truth as far as I could tell at the time. I didn't realize I was doing the ultimatum thing and while I'm ashamed of it, I do believe people should be slower to judge.
While you may hear the "or my cat will die" story often, these people are in the pit of despair and don't know what to do much less realize that you hear it so often to have become calloused from it.
They are just telling what they believe to be the truth and really are experiencing something that is turning their lives upside down -the bleakness makes it difficult to see, think, function, properly.
To say I waited too long for poor Dodger is an inaccurate assumption... Dodger was a I have a stray we call Dodger, who was probably already infected the day we met...
my daughter and I convinced my husband to let us bring him in as part of the family. Believe me, I knew I'd win, but it's best to have hubby on board.
We called the vet right away and made Dodger's appointment to get vaccinated and neutered...
Do you have a hubby and children? As a stay @ home mom, (youngest just started kindergarten) it's generally assumed that the bread winner has the final say on many things....
I could be argumentative and insistent, but, I generally try the persuasive route first.
When my husband heard the news and advice from the vet - as far as he was concerned, that was that. But I wasn't willing to put such an outwardly healthy animal to sleep and went straight home to research, and email and phone anyone I thought could help. As far as I knew I was racing the clock.
By days end I was informed enough to argue Dodgers case with hubby and won.
My hubby is not easy to reason with, but we got Dodger back from the vet and now he remains safe in the garage with his own blankets, litter box etc. until I find a home for him and continue to educate hubby as I educate myself on these diseases.
How scary it is that people tend to take what veterinarians say, however wrong, at face value. That could've been me!
I won't give up. Finding Dodger a home is top priority. So my question to you is, might you or anyone you know of have room for a really cool, affectionate felv/fiv cat from mid-michigan?
I'm at 989-600-5906 (it's right this time!)

Christine :)
