Blessedly, we have mostly shorthairs plus one fairly
fastidious longhair, so I haven't had to test this, but I would think something
like a light cooking oil would help -- it would probably soften up the clumpies,
not dry any tender body part out, and not be harmful (and marginally
helpful with hairballs) for the cat to clean off later.
