My ex-step-dad's father would spend an hour after every grocery shopping trip WASHING everything he bought before putting it in his refrigerator or pantry: gallons of milk, blocks of cheese, jars of condiments, canned food, all washed with hot soapy water, if the label fell off, he would use a marker to write the contents on the can... non-washable packaged foods got sprayed with Lysol, etc.
