I know there have been other members here who lost cats in respiratory
distress. Personally, if it has been on-going, but not worsening, I would go
to the vet where the cat could be put in an oxygen cage for a while and
treated (possibly with steroids like Dexamethasone or Depomedrol, or both).
It's certainly not a sure sign of the end, by any means. Yes, sometimes it
does happen that way, but then there are also many causes of respiratory
distress, most of which ARE treatable.
