Well, the Baytril could possibly have done away with whatever "friendly" bacteria he had to digest his food. So supplementing with kitty lactobacillus might be worth trying. If he's an older kitty, he could have problems with digestion anyway. I had my older kitty Nicky on Lactulose for a couple of years I think, it worked great. I also had him on homeopathic Nux Vomica for his constipation. Sometimes I wish I'd written things down over the last 5 years, but I didn't.

The vet seems to think that the Baytril has caused the problems and thrown off his balance. I wondered about 'megacolon' when I saw the x-ray though. There was so much in there...

Speaking of ulcerative colitis, I myself have colitis (it sucks), so I also wonder if this is a possibility? I don't know anything about it occuring in cats though. I know for me, and many other uc sufferers, any oral antibiotics will bring up a temporary flare of my symptoms. Maybe he has undiagnosed UC and the antibiotic is causing him extra trouble? Or, he could have an anal fissure/tear (maybe due to those hard stools)...there are lots of possibilities. He should see the vet though. If you don't know why he's bleeding like that, it's a problem.

Tonya, I really don't know - it could be a colitis due to harder stools - remember how much trouble Smoky had for his first several years with fresh blood on his stools. I would keep a close eye on him tonight. Did the fresh blood seem to be coming from his anus or his penis? How old is he?

My cat Bob (negative) has a kidney infection and I took him to the vet last Thursday. The doctor put him on antibiotics and said he was not blocked. This morning when I got up there was blood on the sheet where he had been lying and his rectal area seems red and raw. Does this have anything to do with the kidney infection, or would this be something totally different? I'm trying to decide if I should call in sick and take him to the vet first thing this morning or wait till after work. He had deficated one small very dry poo this morning along with the bloody places. He acts ok...............

Bob has a history of this and has been operated on for stones before. The area around his penis looks fine..........
