I found a nice article written on 2002 describing about 20 felv cats with neurologic symptoms and the necropsy reports. Most of the cats did not have any tumors. Basically what they found was axonal and myelin degeneration (the neurons and their surrounding sheath were degenerated). The areas that were most strongly affected could be seen without a microscope as plagues in the spinal cord. They stained these cells with a stain that highlights the presence of a specific felv protein - the cells were filled with it. This suggests that the virus infects neurons and destroys them.
