Mary,
  Epogen is a hormone found naturally in the body.  It's used mostly
with Chemo or folks on dialysis.  Chemo destroys RBC's and those with
kidney problems don't make enough of the hormone.  It stimulates the RBC
making areas of the bone marrow to make red blood cells.  It works very
well, but only if that hormone level is lower than normal.  If it is
normal, it doesn't do much.  At least that is what I was told by the Un
of Penn, who uses it lot on animals there.  It's counterpart, Neupogen,
is for WBCs and works very well!  Both are human drugs they have found
helps our furry friends as well.  barb
