Carla: Have you vaccinated the rest of the family so that you can reunite
him with them? It makes me sad too that he he is separated.

Hi Susan,

Nice to see you back on the list. Charmed was tested again but
this time he had both test.
His Elisa came back positive again. His IFA is back but I missed
the doctor. She left a message but not total clear on what it read
except that he was positive, probabaly will have Felv for the rest of
his life, may or may not have secondary infections but will not
come down with Lekemia. She will be in tomorrow and I will call
her. But you told Sharon not to restest till after 6 months of using
Interferon. Is that how long it could take the Interferon in working if
it can turn around?

I am a little sad about the result but happy he is feel good. It was
hoping to reunit him with his family. I am sure he'd love to play with
them.

Thanks,

Carla

Hi Sharon, nope, I took him off it, but do monitor his blood work, any
changes in eating, energy etc. He actually tested neg on ELISA which is
normally done on blood as is IFA and PCR. But because his white cell counts
were so bad, my vet said that the virus could be hiding in the bone marrow..

that's why they did the bone marrow aspirate IFA. It took one week for that
test. Franklin would have had the IFA on blood. If that's positive,
generally further testing isn't necessary until after the use of interferon
for about 6 months. If pos. again, then I would probably say that the cat is

persistently infected. The PCR test is more sensitive than the IFA - it's
supposed to be very very very accurate. It tests the cells for the DNA of
the virus, so even if hiding in bone marrow, the circulating cells "should"
show the DNA of the virus if present in the cat.
