Don't beat yourself up. You didn't know better. Your story is EXACTLY why I
am more upset at vets than the people who "own" the cats. Diana and Matt are
a couple who foster for our humane society. They got their first cat when
they were stationed in Hawaii a few years ago. They took it to be spayed and
declawed because that's what your "supposed" to do. The vet said he would do
it, but wanted them to know exactly what it was. He explained the procedure
and showed the pictures. Matt said he was almost in tears over what they
almost did to their cat. If more vets were like that, many less cats would
be declawed. I firmly believe that those who would do it anyway are the
exception rather than the rule. The vast majority of people do not want to
bring harm on the animal and would be willing to use an alternative method,
like Soft Paws. Thank you for sharing your story!
Oh, I just was looking for apartments in Dallas online and found one that
sounded good. When I got to the pet description part it said "cats only-
neutered and declawed a must" so I just clicked on to the next one.... but
not before I emailed that property and requested that they not make
mutilating your cat a requirement to live there. I know I will not hear back
from them, but it makes me feel better!
