Scott, it's always good to clean the carpets, but I really don't think you
need to go to that extent just to be sure that you're rid of the virus.
Spraying areas with a diluted bleach solution would more than suffice.  I do
admit that I'm a paranoid mom, so I'd probably do the same thing though
anyway, just to be sure.  Can't be too safe...  Good luck with the new
kitties - I'm sure you'll know who is destined to be your very special baby
the moment you lay eyes on them.  Please do consider adopting an older kitty
from a shelter.  Most of them never find homes, and never get out of the
shelter alive, especially this time of year - kitten season.  Even kitties as
young as a year old are hard now, and usually they are healthier than
kittens.  Just a thought.  Whatever your heart decides, please keep us posted!

Leslie, to answer your questions, I live in Reston, Virginia -- a suburb of
Washington DC.

My brother has a friend who's cat just had a litter of kittens and is
trying to find homes for them, so I may get one (or two!) of them. I have
to wait 6-8 weeks when they can be weaned off their mother. That time frame
coincides with my vet's recommendation that I give my condo 1-2 months time
before bringing in new cats. He said that even though the virus only lasts
a very short time airborne, any saliva, urine, or spit-up residue left in
the carpet may still hold the virus. He also said to throw away any
bedding, food bowls, litter boxes, which I've done. He said give my place
1-2 months before bringing in a new cat. I'm also beginning a whole-house
carpet steam-cleaning job today. I'm spraying down industrial-strength
cleaner/degreaser, scrubbing that in with a deck brush, then spraying down
vinegar and water (per instructions of the carpet cleaner bottle) and also
scrubbing that in with a deck brush. Then, I use my carpet steam cleaner
with hot water. Hope this does the trick. (I just did the dining room and
threw out the water -- sheesh, I never knew my carpets were that dirty!)

up and raised indoors. It may also be a good idea to notify the

I think that's a GREAT idea? Where are you located...forgive me if I
forgot....

One of my rescue friends is moving and trying to place all of her
remaining
rescues, soooo, if you're anywhere in Florida, maybe you can pick from
hers!
