Lisa - I found the book through Amazon.com for a variety of prices (used). I ended up ordering a copy for $2.50 plus shipping!

Hi Lisa - Wow, that's very interesting.  I'll check into getting that book.  I'm familiar with the power of Royal Jelly, but haven't tried that .

Perhaps MBK will get to where I can vet him like the others :)  he's very quiet and sedate, but very, uh, opinionated about being handled!!  He draws the line very clearly.

Gloria,

I'm glad that Mr. Black kitty is home with you. One thing I wanted to mention to you, there's  a book I have by Dr. Alan Shoen called "Love Miracles & Animal Healing" and he had great success with treating a FIV/Felv cat who was losing a lot of weight and basically just going down hill. The treatment he used was Ginseng/Royal Jelly at 6 drops 3 times a day, and the cat recovered and went into remission for 8 years. If anyone else is interested you might also want to try this to bring a sick kitty around. Just a thought. Good luck with Mr. Black Kitty, whatever treatment you decide.  Lisa & Sash

OK Everybody -

I'm going to pick up Mr. Black Kitty(felv/fiv) today at the vets.  A friend is loaning me a 6 ft cage, and I'm going to put it either on the back deck or in the living room with Calawalla or both, alternately.

This is a different vet(different clinic) than I've been to before and I like him very much.  I told him I'm concerned about the diarrhea (for MBK and for my house).  He volunteered the Flagyl, and said to give him some yoghurt daily to help get his flora reestablished.  But also he thinks the kitty's health is pretty bad, so he really doesn't think he's going to make it.   I mean he's the skinniest adult cat I've ever seen.

I'm a bit anxious about all this, but it worked out with Calawalla, so we'll see.

Just wanted to let you know.

If you go with treating with metranidizole (flagyl) ask  your vet for it in liver or chicken flavored treats. they make them now. my cats will just eat them!

Gloria they are treated with Albon and Metradiazanole (Flagyl).  Get the liquid Flagyl instead of the pills.  The pills are very bitter and make some cats foam at the mouth.  The liquid is easier on them.

Gloria, did they *treat* for parasites & worms?  Giardia and Coccidia aren't easy to find and it sometimes takes several stool samples.  It wouldn't hurt him to be treated for them even if none can be seen on a slide.

Also the coat problem could be just plain old malnutrition.

Thanks Terri, Lisa and Tonya - you've helped so much.  I appeciate your feedback.

Mr. Black Kitty *does* have symptoms.  He has lousy hair (not sleek, black, but kinda dry, sticking out, faded looking, like he needs oil and water in his skin).

He's the skinniest cat I've ever seen.  Emaciated.  Yes, they did test for parasites, but none there. He eats a lot, except when he's not feeling well.

Occasionally - sometimes once a day from what I've seen - he seems to not feel well, and holes up under my house or behind the bushes and doesn't eat or act friendly.  Then, later, he'll come up on the porch and ask for food.  The cold seems to affect him.

Anyway, -- more data - I'll check the FIV info.  He's all I've been thinking about, it just worries me so.

Gloria,

Have plain old worms been discounted for how thin he is? I don't know that anyone can help you make a decision like this. I've had to make it many times. Mostly I just do what I can. I would probably try keeping him with my other leuk. positive and see how it goes. Callawala's not likely to get fiv from him if he's neutered, and he already has leukemia.

Are there other symptoms besides him being too thin to consider at this point? I do have a total feral that I've only ever been able to even touch at the vet's who lives inside with all of us in peace. She just won't let me near her, but she loves the other cats.

I always just kind of look at it like I'm not going to mortgage the house to save this one, but I'll let them spend the time they have left in  a comfortable home.

sorry I can't be of more help. you have to do what will work for you.
