He had a scarred esophagus and had multiple surgeries. The smell was infection combined with the inability to wash himself -- I was amazed at how stinky a cat can get without regular cleaning! His big sister, bless her heart, used to chase him around the house trying to clean him but he wasn't much into that -- probably becaue of the cone around his head he couldn't see what she was up to and that made him nervous. At one point she snuck up on him, hopped on top of him, wrapped both legs around his little bod and flopped over on to her side. She had him gently pinned and gave him a good washing! Ah, memories...
