Subject: Re: Kittens born with Leukemia

Cricket,
I don't know if this is the norm but Buffy was almost 5 years old when she got sick after we had her fixed and declawed.  She was an indoor cat and never around any other cats.  We just found out that her mom was an outdoor cat.  The vet said she was probable born with Felv from her mother.  If the first vet had tested before we had her go through the surgery we would not have done it and she would not have gotten sick.  She could have lived for years they told us.  She passed away today from Anemia.  The first vet would not run blood work and by the time we got her to a vet Felv friendly she was to sick.  This may not be normal for most cats but it is her story.  I have read that there are different strans that are more fatal than others.  It seems some are suppressable and that is what Buffy had.

Subject: Kittens born with Leukemia

Hi guys,

I have another question. How long do kittens usually live if they are born with Leukemia? We've always wondered when Rumble and her brother's had gotten leukemia. But now I really wonder if they were born with it.

Do you want to hear something really weird? Rumble's mom (named Spider) was a stray that adopted us 9 yrs ago. Four months after Rumble was born, September 2000, her mom just disappeared one day and we never saw her again. We live on the edge of town, so we thought a coyote got her since we never found any sign of her.

Just last night the kids were playing 2 houses down and one of them found a dead cat, nothing but bones and fur. Well we knew right away by what fur was left that it was Rumble's mom! All this time she had been under an old camper shell in the backyard, 2 houses away!

We didn't know anything about Leukemia when her mom disappeared and didn't even know any of her kids had it until Rumble was tested, then we started treating them for it. I wonder if Rumble's mom died of leukemia and her babies were born with it? Since all 3 of her kids died close together I'm wondering if they actually were born with it. They were born in May of 2000. We lost one in November 2001 and then Rumble and the other one both in January. Making them alittle over 1-1/2 yrs old. If they were born with it is that about how long they live?

Atleast we now finally have Spider home. I cried all over again, almost as if she had just left. But now she's finally at rest with all of her kids. For that I am sooo glad!!
