Jamie, My girlfriend did the 'crating' thing on her puppy last summer and also had a leash that was tied to the bed at night so her puppy learned who was the boss... When she was first doing this, I kind of felt it was mean - but now, you would not believe how much of a dream and joy she is!! She is a golden retriever and she has never once had to yell at her to come back or heel, is ecstatic to meet new people, is really gentle around small children - she automatically just lays down and lets them pet her. And ADORES her mom. My friend trains her daily even if it's by putting down her food, then making her wait while she goes to take out the garbage. Again, no yelling, just, "Meg, wait."
