Yo Nancy - I'm in Arkansas, and all those bugs are here in my neighborhood - we call them water bugs. We also have these itty-bitty short snakes but they only appear occasionally.

Jamie, I lived in Texas about 25 years ago; are these big roaches
waterbugs? We had those. They'r related to cockroaches, but not the same.
Cockroaches like the dirty areas; these just like the moist spots. A lot
of states have them in one variety or another. Here in Indiana they're
called woodroaches, in Florida they're palmetto bugs. All about the same.
Ugly, but harmless. My ex husband, a weirdo, used to PLAY with them; he'd
run toward one and it would scuttle back, then he would back off and it
would scuttle toward him, so he said. Ugh. Good luck. I wouldn't kill
one, but I sure didn't enjoy them either!
