Brenda, the "remoteness" and size of population in your area probably does explain why your vet previously hadn't used the combo test. Nevertheless, since unneutered males in particular are very susceptible to FIV, and rural/outlying areas often have barn kitties, seems that would be all the more reason to test nowadays for FIV too.
