Sam, I'm so sorry for your loss. My big white boy, Kidd, almost lost his fight with a UTI a few months ago. It is so hard to watch them suffer, isn't it, especially when they're as gentle and sweet as your Elric, and my Kidd, are. They sound like brothers.
