it's good that you're getting him checked out! If you could get a fresh (less than 12 hours and newly emitted would be best) stool sample to the vet as well, that would help.
I have to say that I doubt very much it's serious. My Smoky has had soft stools and fresh blood with each bowel movement for most of his life (he's 5.5) and he is the most obnoxiously healthy happy boy around. He's been on prescription diets since about age 5 months and had been treated for giardia and clostridium perfringens. He was blood free for about 8 months after the clostridium treatment, but when we moved into this apartment, the blood came back. He's been tested for EVERYTHING. He's tested negative for the clostridium since the blood came back, but..... anyway, he's very happy and never goes outside the box, but I do occasionally see dried blood smears on the counter or on the bathroom floor. We just had two lovely snuggly nap sessions this afternoon and he's the biggest lover boy:D.
Anyhoo, there are a number of things they can check for in the stool, that if positive, are easily treated. And if he's so stressed about going to the vet - or just seeing strangers, it could be something similar to IBS in people. Nervous tummy.

They gave me some pills last time that unfortunately took effect a couple of hours after we got home! Can you tell if the blood is from urine or fecal? (as in...what did Big Boy leave in the box?) The vet will surely ask. Blood in the urine, especially for a male can get serious quick. Blood in the stool is usually not so serious...could be an intestinal infection, etc, or just from straining. I'm so glad you're going to talk to the vet tomorrow. Meantime, keep an eye on the litter box.
