Hi,
I see that Father cat is + by ELISA but - by IFA. This means that he
has been exposed to the virus and is trying to fight it, and that it
has not yet progressed to the bone marrow (he is not persistently
viremic). He still may fight this off and turn up negative on a future
test. Carriers are typically IFA positve as well as ELISA positive,
but they tend to show no symptoms of the disease. I would suggest
putting him on interferon for the next few months to boost his immune
system and maybe help him fight off the disease. You need to have him
retested in 3 months and see what the results are at that time.
Hope this helps,

Hello Anyone,
The day after Christmas 2003, we took in 17 cats (about five
generations) of the same family from a friend who could not afford to
spay/neuter. We do not know which kittens belong to who except we know
the original matriarch and patriarch. They were all kept together
indoors in one room. The approx. ages of the positive cats and their
FeLV and FIV status are listed below. The question is, is Father an
immune carrier or not since IFA tested negative for FeLV and he has two
positive daughters/granddaughters and one positive granddaughter/great
granddaughter? The remaining cats were negative by Elisa except for
one unknown. I am trying to get the positive cats into a sanctuary and
they asked me to pose this question. The reason we can't keep them is
that we already have 11 indoor cats, 4 dogs and 1 bird. Veterinary
care is already burdensome for their maintenance and various physical
problems so we cannot keep any more. Thanks for any insight into
Father Cat's negative IFA.
