Belinda,
My CousCous, a 15 year old orange tabby striped sweetheart, just died about an hour ago, 2:00AM on 4-2-04. She died of cancer and went fast after diagnosis two weeks ago. She was not FeLV positive.
CousCous died peacefully, we are pretty sure. My son did not hear any sounds from his bedroom next to where she was resting in a long, narrow cardboard box that she had come to like and find comfort there, I guess, so I believe she went peacefully.
I'm so glad I didn't have to take her to the vet to be put down.
Desi, my shy 3 year old Maine Coon girl, seems to be taking it hard, looking frightened and sad. She and Jonathan, my 11 year old Ragdoll boy, keep looking into the box and pacing. Robb, my son, and I had wrapped her up in a pink sheet and left her body upstairs until we can take her out tomorrow and hopefully bury her if the ground is not too frozen. Those cats upstairs were always close to each other, all six of them. They never fought and seemed to love each other. We used to hear heavy footsteps running around at night and I asked Andrea, my daudhter, who was running up there so merrily and she said Desi, who was a kitten then, and CousCous. I was so surprised. She was kind of an old lady in her actions when I got her but I think she and Desi had a mother/daughter type relationship.
I opened the sheet to let the other cats look in and see for themselves but they did not want to come over so I left it at that. I cried for a good while on the bed and the other 5 cats gathered around in silence and seemed to be in mourning with me.
I adopted her when she was 10 after her elderly guardian died. The woman's daughter brought her to me in her pink carrier with her pink brush and a case of Fancy Feast. It was obvious that she was well loved and she had a thorough vet record, too. She took it hard to be in a strange house without her lady and with other cats and even dogs and she hid for months. She came around, though, and became a most loving and gentle companion, always purring loudly and such a good girl. She was tiny and bright orange tabby striped and very dainty.
Well, I just wanted to talk about my girl. Thanks for listening. I found the poem I was looking for on the petloss site but parts of it don't apply so I wanted to share the parts that did apply to her, very much so, I believe.
A Parting Prayer
Dear Lord, please open your gates and call St. Francis to come escort this beloved companion across the Rainbow Bridge.
Assign her to a place of honor, for she has been a faithful servant and has always done her best to please me.
Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss. Help me remember the details of her life with the love she has shown me. And grant me the courage to honor her by sharing those memories with others.
Let her remember me as well and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise, please allow her to accompany those who will bring me home.
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of her companionship and for the time we've had together.
