Just read the posts--You are kinder than I am about vet.  He is, more than likely, not responding on the advice of counsel and/or insurance company....  He is absolutely liable and insurance should have paid asap!  By not responding, he is just assuming it 'will all go away'.  I would encourage you to pursue--if he did this to Sophie, one can assume he will do to others!  Is there anyone who can go to his office directly?  Also, is it too late to contribute?

Lisa,
The surgery is being done at
Michigan State University by Dr. Bryden Stanley, an expert in reconstruction, they tell me.  She told me that they will create "muscle flaps" to build a new anus as I understand it plus there are areas of pouching in the rectum that will be strengthened by muscle flaps, too.  The vet who damaged her cauterized her tail clear to the body, no tail left, and somehow also burned off the anus and damaged surrounding tissue.  I don't know about nerve damage, they have not mentioned that.  There is just no muscle at all where her anal sphincter should be, just a rectum sticking out.  I have a few pictures but only one shows her body very well at all, as she would tend to hide under her foot stool when I brought the camera out.  I would be glad to share pics if anyone wants to see.  I have not had time to build a page up for her, although I want to, I have to refresh my memory on how to even do that.

Barb, I know what you mean, as far as I know the vet who damaged Sophie has not responded at all to anyone about the fax I sent.  Maybe he is out of town, is the only excuse I see for that.

Anne,
I have several peeps asking where you are getting the surgery done, and who
is doing it..they are curious proffesionals wondering exactly what is being
done? Also they are trying to get a picture for what actually happened...what
she looks like...how far up was the tail amputation...is there any tail left?
Did she loose her anal tone becauuse of nerve damage, or because he cut in teh
wrong spot, if in the wrong spot, what exactly is wrong....they are trrying to
figure out how the vet mistakenly cut teh anal region instead of the
tail...do you have any pics of her?and the site? Thanks
