Title: Message
Dear Julie
Earlier this week, I was wondering how Eduardo was doing----so thanks very much for the update. He's an amazing cat, huh? (Though not as amazing as his guardian--with your permission, I'd like to send this email to my friends; I want them to know that everything you've put in this email is an example of what the wonderful, dedicated members on this list, and the feral list (as well as all the rescue group members) do on a daily basis to improve the lives of homeless kitties).
Enjoyed reading about the other kitties too. I am SO glad the new kitty has found you.....he sounds such a sweetheart. He must think he's hit the jackpot. Do you have a name for him yet? Although, I realize he doesn't hear it.
I use 10mg CoQ10 per cat (that size isn't available everywhere, but my health food store had it). (I think that must have been the amount recommended by A Frasier, but I'll check tonight.) Can't remember the brand...I just took whatever they had.
take care, and all good wishes
Kerry

Subject: My FIV+ Summer

Dear Friends,

It has been a very busy summer and quite cat-active, too!  Some of you may remember Eduardo.  I was able to re-trap him and he bided his time for about a week until he CHEWED thru the side panel of the air conditioner in his room, and, yes, escaped again.  I could NOT believe it when I got home that day; I just stood there looking at it in complete disbelief!

About a week went by this time before he returned.  There was some initial hissing and swatting with my outside cats, but he seems to have decided that my yard is home.  I did a lot of soul-searching and I have chosen not to re-trap him.  He is not an agressive cat, he has staked out his his own area and is pretty much just hanging out with the outside cats.  I realize that there is a risk to them, but I have to consider every risk that they face every day when they go out (I am praying for winter, because they are then content to lay in their beds around the furnace).  Eduardo is now letting me stroke his back and stands on tippy-toes and raises his butt to be scratched.  He actually comes when I call him and he will follow me for food, so I hope to lure him into the mudroom this winter and see how he feels about being inside when it's freezing outside!  Maybe he'll have a big attitude adjustment.

Maurice, my 2nd FIV+ kitty is an enormous, muscular block of yellow fur!  He has quite a personality and is fascinated by the cats outside his door.  He really needs someone his own age to play with.  At the moment, he is quite disturbed about his new roomate, Brownie; jealous and cranky.

Joan got a call last week from a family who has been feeding a feral colony for many years.  One of the cats (who they believe to be around 9 years of age) was sitting in the middle of the road apparently oblivious to everything around him.  They've never been able to get near this cat, but could see from a distance that he's had some severe scarring to one eye for quite some time.  They were able to go up behind him and push him into a carrier.  He had a visit to the vet that day and both eyes are completely scarred from prior infection.  He also seems to be almost completely deaf.  And, he is FIV+.  I picked him up Monday night and he is in an acclimation cage.  It's taken a couple of days, but he is figuring out the location of the litter box, where his cage cup of water is, and how to negotiate around.  He was hissing up a storm at the vet and at Joan's after his neuter surgery (I did a fundraiser over the weekend so! he recuperated with her until Monday), but he's really not a feral cat.  He is responding to being stroked and held and by yesterday, he was purring.  He is CRAZY about catnip and eats anything and everything that you put in front of him.  His bloodwork was surprisingly good, too, so I feel hopeful about his future.  He's pathetically thin, so I need to pack some weight on him!

He feels the vibration of my footsteps (like Luna does) when I go into his room and he started  meowing last night!

Once he and Maurice are accustomed to each other's smell, he will leave the cage and I will arrange his bed, litter box and food in the same pattern they are in in the cage and I think he will do just fine.  Last night he was walking a bit (using my leg as a guide) and stretching his legs!  There is a large counter in their room (it's an old pantry) and Maurice prefers it up there so that he can look out the window.  I'm hoping that they will get along and that ultimately I can try Eduardo with them.

That's my summer so far!

I'd like to start all the FIV+ cats on CoQ10; can someone share the dosage they are using and do you have a preferred brand?

Hugs to everyone and headbutts to all the furries!

Love, Julie
