Title: Re: Epogen in FeLV

We ran into the same problem with Leo…if I recall, the kidneys excrete a hormone that alerts the bone marrow to produce red blood cells…hence, Epogen’s helpfulness with CRF related anemia…I guess it makes sense that once an FeLV kitty’s bone marrow is destroyed, Epogen is of little use…but like Jo said, if the anemia is due to something other than the virus attacking the bone marrow, then Epogen might come in handy!

Hi Jo,

We used procrit for both Moon and Blue. It wasn't helpful to either of them. That was because their anemia was being caused by the Felv having destroyed their bone marrow. My understanding is that procrit does help Felv+ kitties who have anemia for other reasons or who still have some functioning bone marrow. The only way to know for sure is to do a bone marrow biopsy, so it may be easier just to try it, and see if it helps.

Hi Guys
I'm a member of an anemia group, and the subject of Procrit is very common and regularly recommended for non-regenerative anemia, usually the result of CRF.

Recently there have been a couple of new members questioning it's use for FeLV related anemia. I've already posted (and nagged) about the possibility of Haemobartonella, and other causes, but that's another story. I know the subject of Procrit/Epogen comes up from time to time here, but I don't recall anyone actually used it successfully for anemia specifically related to FeLV.

Does anyone have anything to share on this subject? I've encouraged people with FeLV kitties to join our group, but to date I don't think they have. I know 1 kitty has already passed away.

Thanks for you help.
Jo

PS.. Lucky is doing well. Haemobart appears to have finally cleared, with PCV back to normal, although she may be on pred indefinitely. And she's very happy that Hurricane Frances is finally gone!
