Dear Barbara:

That's great news you are still able to get Jelly Roll to eat something and
accept assistance with the process. As long as he is still cooperating in that
regard it is a good sign. Sometimes it can be necessary to feed with a
syringe to keep them eating and get past a crisis, but long-term it is very
stressful for them. If his bone marrow is not completely trashed and he is still
able to make sufficient RBC and the anemia doesn't continue to get worse, his
appetite will likely improve.

With regards to the hematocrit, I'm sure your vet will advise you that if it
drops down to single digits, it is critical. If it goes below 9 then a
transfusion is usually needed which can buy some time, but unless he is able to make
enough new RBC on his own, it is only a temporary measure.

My heart aches for you, as I've been there and it is so draining emotionally.
Right now I don't have any positives in crash mode, thankfully. I do have a
brother sister pair just over a year old who are developing the tell-tale
gingivitis, so I'm trying to stay positive for their sake, but it is hard not to
wonder if/when the other shoe will drop.

Sounds like Jelly Roll is still hanging in there and I am sure he is glad to
know he is loved and has a human who will go the extra mile for him. Try to
keep him surrounded with love and positive thoughts. I will keep him in my
prayers.
