Subject: Puppy Mill-- Help Needed !!Please crosspost and send to anyone who can provide assistance-- thanksThere is a large puppy mill operation near Raleigh that has been in business for about 20 years. At this time a dedicated group of people are planning to take legal action to close this place down. The first step has now been taken, 5 criminal animal cruelty charges have been filed by the Lee County DA and the trial is scheduled to take place soon.We are preparing to file civil cruelty charges under the 19A statute, Justice for Animals and others have been helping with that project. In addition, ALDF may be providing support and assistance. The ASPCA, HSUS, and Kelli Ferris, DVM (NC State Vet School), are planning to provide assistance when the dogs are removed from the owners possession. There are appx. 300 dogs and puppies plus over 100 Cockatiels. We now have a building in which to house the animals for the purpose of medical exams, treatment, and transfer to foster homes. The purpose of this message is to ask for your help. We need volunteers to assist with caring for the animals where they will be held. That could be for 2-3 weeks. There is a need for crates, pens, fences, etc., which would be returned when the project is completed. Supplies may also be needed.Last but not least, Foster homes are needed for these animals. The breeds include Pugs, Boston Terriers, Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers, Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Shelties, Shih Tzu mixes, and app. 15 med.-lg. mixed breed dogs. There are about 100 birds.Donated funds that are received will go toward the cost of care and treatment of the animals, however the foster folks will have to take care of the expenses and submit receipts for reimbursement. The amount of reimbursement will be proportional to the amount received.Permanent custody will be granted after a victory in court. The evidence is overwhelming. However, if by some weird circumstance the defendants win, we may have to return the animals. We see that as a very, very slim possibility but one that you need to know about. To learn more and to offer your assistance, please contact D.K. Schaller, DVM at [EMAIL PROTECTED] , Pat Sprouse at 919- 775 - 7675 or at [EMAIL PROTECTED] , or DL Thoms at [EMAIL PROTECTED].You can help us take a major step toward getting Puppy Mill laws, regulation and inspection put in place in North Carolina. We appreciate your interest and we will appreciate any support and assistance you can provide. We look forward to working together to rescue the animals and end this cruel exploitation. Thanks,DL Thoms, DDS
