You know, Karolyn, I'm going to remember your words. I think they are so
true. It certainly rings true in light of my one experience with
Caramel, anyway. I just kept hoping he would 'perk up'...and as long as
he was eating his fave food (which I guess he was doing up till 3-4 days
before the end) I had that hope. 
But now, his unfocused eyes, and his turning his back to the room, are
what keep haunting me...and this was the case for weeks and weeks.
So even tho he was eating, I think his quality of life had greatly
diminished.
I'm learning!

I am so sorry for your loss  with the passing of Caramel. I have been
rescuing FELV+ cats and kittens for 12+yrs. I have a wonderful vet of
21yrs who works with me to give my cats the best possible life they can
have. We have learned together that the kindest thing to do, is that
when the FELV "Kicks In", is to put them to sleep. It never gets any
easier. All we can do is give them lots of  love for the time they are
with us. I feel blessed to have had the number of cats I have had  in my
life.
