OK -- I was going to keep my 2 cents out of this, but here goes.
 
I've been on this list since 1999.  Lately I "lurk", but I read every post, even if I don't reply to them.  The policy I have always followed is this:  if a rude comment is made, whether in jest or not, it's still rude and doesn't deserve a response.  Here's my thinking:
 
I've read all of the messages in this and the related thread.  There is no doubt in my mind that Ong is an educated and intelligent person.  None at all.  It would appear that he has chosen to ignore the fact that most of us on this list are not involved in scientific research, and quite a few of us have been finished with our "formal" education for many years.  In my experience in life I have found that there are some people who don't know any other way to be EXCEPT confrontational and/or sarcastic.  I know this because I can be quite sarcastic myself and choose NOT to be, because it causes people injury (in assorted ways).
 
So -- obviously Ong is feeding off of all of our indignation and apparently finds it amusing that he has offended many of us with his sarcasm.  He obviously knows that he is way ahead of most of us in the amount of scientific education and experience he has in this disease, and is finding great pleasure in his attempts to add fuel to the fire.
 
If you want it to stop, don't reply to his posts.  He can't belittle you if you don't feed him.
 
That's all I'm going to say on this matter.  I'm disturbed that after 5+ years on this list, I have to feel like you guys need to walk on eggshells just because one person lacks appropriate communication skills.  Perhaps English is not his native tongue.
