Teri, I am sorry for your loss. Dogs that bloat often bloat again. Older dogs are more susceptible than younger ones. Chances are, Beethoven would have bloated again. There are factors that are difficult to pinpoint and you may not be able to eradicate. I just did research for this for a general pet board I moderate. 10 years is pretty darn old for a dog as large as Beethoven. You did the best that you could. He had a good life with you and that is all any pet can ask for.

I do think you should look into getting a different vet though. I have found that the best vets are not usually the ones that gouge the heck out of their clients. It sounds like your vet may be guilty of that.

I have just caught up reading about everyones fur babies. I just am so down right now. My St Bernard, Beethoven came down with bloat and had to be put down Friday night. He was 10 years old and this emergency vet came in the room and explained he was in grave condition, it would take $500.00 to start surgery and the bill would be around $3000.00 when he was done. He was old and having a hard time getting around as it was and she never said one thing about his age, just the fee involved. I had already lost another St Bernard last Christmas,2003. He had bladder stones and dies on the operating table from too much anesthesia. We had an autopsy done on him and that was the initial cause of death. Yep, that vet even sent me a bill for his "professional services". I haven't paid it. We can go to court! So needless to say when all of this money, money came up Friday night all I could say is I had already lost one on the operating table and this guy is old and my heart just couldn'!
t go
through that again. He was so bad in just the 15 min to get him to the emergency vet's office he didn't know us anymore. Would he have made it? I just don't know and I sit here and second guess myself today.

I just needed to vent............. thanks for listening

Teri
