When my cat Percy passed last year, a month before turning 20, she did so during a half hour when no one was in the room with her. She had been laying on her side breathing shallowly for hours, with either my mom or dad with her.  At some point they both slept, in the other room, and a half hour later when my father went in to be with her she had passed away.  They really felt that she had waited until they left, which is often the case with humans too.
