I have a digital thermometer that has a rectal mode.  You do need a rectal 
thermometer or one with a rectal mode.

I don't know. Do you think I should take his temp? If so, can I use a human
anal thermometer, and what is the normal range? Would there be anything to 
do
for a fever? If not, I am not sure I want to bother him with it.
