Eventually, I've solved my problem by doing a global upgrade that
included fiat-python, ufl-python and some other fenics related packages.
For completeness, this is what you suggested I try:
instant-clean did not help and the compile log said:
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/lib/libpython2.7.so', needed
by `_instant_module_8cd421a2d237c898db8871262e522b9065260243.so'. Stop.
