the C extension is littered with these warnings:

 warning: cast to pointer from integer of different size

which can be harmless, or not, but ive definitely seen these warnings 
gradually disappear from other stuff after running gentoo-amd64 for a 
while..


gdb just does this:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
Cannot remove breakpoints because program is no longer writable.
It might be running in another process.
Further execution is probably impossible.

)too lazy to compile ruby with -g to see if its more informative..(
