Dave One last thought on this... because this will be new code.... originally I was going to write the count as a client side piece of code to count the documents in each category. I realised that I would have to return the full result set in order to do this which would cause problems with performance. If I were to write this as a server side script, outside of ferret, I believe that I could achieve the same result as in your example. Can you think of any gotchas that would make this a stupid idea?
