Thanks, I was thinking about virtualization for trying different types of linux as well.
My end goal is to have this linux box running as local web server in my house that is setup exactly (file structure, technologies, etc) like our remote server with development versions of our websites (available via local network only) running on it so I have a fully controlled testing environment when I can then work on learning/utilizing python, ruby, etc...without any risk of taking down any of our live websites (which I have occasionally done!).
